The producers probably picked 85 million years ago with dinosaurs because it represents a time before civilization and a place to start from a new beginning. Of course the dinosaurs will add drama and visual effect like they did in the premiere. If they chose to leave them out I'm sure people would be wondering where the dinosaurs are
So man will have 20 million years to prepare for an asteroid strike. We are currently working on technology to prevent something like that from happening again. They can bring the current technology with them to Terra Nova AND they have 20 million years to improve upon it. I don't see it as a threat.
BTW what would be the timeline from Homo Erectus to the day they began to migrate through the worm hole? I'm guessing it's several million years less than the 20 million you think they would have from Terra Nova settlement to asteroid strike.
As for the time travel vs clean air problem it hasn't been revealed yet as to what happened but a simple explanation would be either the problem is irreversible or the technology for time travel was discovered before a solution to revert the air quality.
My guess is they just used up the earth and the only turning back was in time.
