I crack up when people have this dreamy vision of "clean rural life" like it's some kind of picnic. I grew up working on farms as a kid. It's dirty, exhausting, backbreaking work that never stops, from before dawn until after dark, with no days off, and no vacations for the farmer, ever.

Talk about being a slave? Try owning a farm. That life owns you, and it never stops

None of these "exploited" people are unhappy that corporations open factories in their areas, and no one forces them to work there, they will walk miles and line up for days to get those jobs.
i had to quote that one. its all true. i live in a village that is 95% subsistence farmers. they are up before me every day, follow their cows around all day, or work in their rice paddies, come home tired to some shitty food they grew themselves, drink a bit of rice whiskey, beat their wife, and pass out. wake up at 4-5am and do it again. most of them make less a month than i bill for 3 hours of programming. oh, and the kids follow in their footsteps. most are farming as soon as they can walk. school is only required to 6th grade. few make it past that.

its not a glorious life. they would be pretty happy if an iphone factory landed nearby.
