Also, the time of year is going to greatly influence rates - it's very possible you may potentially save more staying on property than off depending on schedule and hotel / resort selected.
A big advantage of on-property is less driving and less parking hassles. It really depends on what you and family want the highlights of the vacation to be - what I mean is some prefer to do Disney only as part of a larger vacation while others seek to have Disney be the main focus.
Lastly, imho, vacation is one of those times where spending a little more freely is ok ... life is short and one can't take it with them. Sure one should search deals and not get gouged, but often I see people who are traveling super-cheap being miserable and/or stressed much of the time - worrying about this and that; excessive things going wrong.
