My path to .jpg files (as in the .tpl files)

Code:

<li><a href="{$name_name2}/path/{$xxx1.xxx2}/to/01.jpg"><img style="border-color:#000000;" border="2" src="{$name_name2}/path/{$xxx1.xxx2}/thumbnails/01.jpg" /></a></li>

But now is the file .ext not always .jpg, but often .JPG

What is the easiest way around this ?
