Here it is the storyline. You don't have to go to watch it and spend money.
You just summed up the very reason for the Avengers - their mission statement if you will. In the comics, the heroes were initially brought together to tackle the Hulk (who was being controlled by Loki, I think). Seeing what they could accomplish when working together, they and the Hulk formed the Avengers.

As far as fighting each other first, that's a common element in most comic book team-up stories. It's a comic book movie, I see nothing wrong in keeping many of the same elements. I think everyone who read comics as a kid had those "who would win in a fight between..." discussions.

I loved the Avengers TV show, but episodes with Diana Rigg were particularly good. She is also one of the reasons why On Her Majestys Secret Service is one of my favorite Bond films.
