You just summed up the very reason for the Avengers - their mission statement if you will. In the comics, the heroes were initially brought together to tackle the Hulk (who was being controlled by Loki, I think). Seeing what they could accomplish when working together, they and the Hulk formed the Avengers.
As far as fighting each other first, that's a common element in most comic book team-up stories. It's a comic book movie, I see nothing wrong in keeping many of the same elements. I think everyone who read comics as a kid had those "who would win in a fight between..." discussions.

I loved the Avengers TV show, but episodes with Diana Rigg were particularly good. She is also one of the reasons why
