In traffic the other day, a van with Labor Ready printed on it was in front of me.
I recognized the name and thought "Hey, that's the solution to me getting the
couple hundred dollars I need in the next few days, GUARANTEED!!!".
Cliff Notes : It's not a solution. It's a slap in the face with reality!
I got pimp and bitch slapped with double back hands.
Long version :
I got up early this morning before the sun came up, made a rationed portion of breakfast
and got dressed in work boots and jeans, grabbed a sweater and jacket just in case I got
cold because I figured they will have me working outside in some form of manual labor.
I figure I'll probably be digging a ditch, pushing a wheel barrow or picking up trash etc...
And I'm ready to rock and roll baby!
So I called in just to verify the address; I don't fully trust google maps yet.
A lady answers the phone in a voice that I can barely hear and I verify the address
and say I'll be there in a few minutes.
Hop in the car and start thinking : Hmmmmmmm, she didn't sound excited or even
a little perky. That's probably not a good sign. There's probably 100 people there
already and she's like "yeah, another one, yeah yeah".
But to my surprise when I get there I only see a couple of cars. I would think there would
be more, but maybe I'm really early; the sun has just come up.
I go inside and look over a tall, chest high counter to find a lady down behind it
sitting in a chair. I say hi, this is my first day and I don't know what to do yet.
I kind of felt afraid to speak, it was very quiet and there were about 7 guys sitting
in chairs reading news papers.
So the lady responds to me, without ever actually looking at me in the most unlively
tone you can imagine, and asked "what type of work are you looking for".
I answered "well anything, whatever you have".
She dully, monotonically asked "have you ever done banquet service?"
I said "not as an actual job, but I've served food before".
She says, still without ever looking at me, "Well, we are only hiring banquet servers
right now and you need 1 and 1/2 years prior experience".
I'm kind of stuck there now just waiting for something to happen I guess.
Kind of in disbelief and then she says, still without ever looking at me,
"check back in a couple of weeks to see if we have anything else".
I said "ok.....ok...." got a dorky kind of expression on my face for a couple of seconds and
said "ok" one more time and then seeing that nothing else was going to happen there;
I walked out.
So I'm driving home actually smiling because I'm basically laughing at myself.
I'm thinking "what the fuck did you think was going to happen?".
I mean, how did I look at all the people I see around here with nothing going on and
asking me for spare change and somehow think it meant nothing.
So right now I'm slightly "dumbfounded".
The question I have now is "am I dumbfounded because I didn't get anywhere with
that, or am I dumbfounded because I was dumb enough to think I would get anywhere?"
