I was able to see the Dead play live scores of times mostly because some of my friends were hardcore Deadheads who always had lots of tickets (and lots of drugs, lol), and the Dead played locally a lot in the Bay Area - often for a week at a stretch, especially for New Year's.
My favorite local shows were at Frost Amphitheater (Stanford Univ.), and Shoreline Amphitheater, just because I like dancing outdoors, and the many memorable New Year's shows ("I may be going to hell in a bucket, but at least I'm enjoying the ride"...) - I was at these shows too (I think, hehe):
...and the most epic Dead show I ever attended was the US Festival in '82 - Breakfast in Bed with the Grateful Dead:
