I think you are so ready to disparage me for playing Devil's advocate that you are missing a lot of what I am saying.
To repeat: I think corporeal punishment is justified at times, but
only as a last resort and never when you're angry.
Additionally, and I'm sure you'll love this, but I'll say it anyway: I think one reason thing's have gotten so bad is because many parents are too wishy-washy to show their kids the 'tough-love' they need to shape them into responsible adults. As a parent, you have the obligation to your child and to society to raise them with the understanding that actions have direct consequences. If you can accomplish that without spankings, great. Otherwise, there's a reason for the saying 'spare the rod and spoil the child.'
Was this father's spanking excessive? Probably. Does it alone constitute child abuse? I don't think so. Should he get some anger management therapy? I think that's a given.
