you can try. i'm sure you know its not as simple as that. but my point is valid and a diverse backlink profile is safer choice.
it might be only the links with the same anchor text get "discounted" by google so its as if they don't exist so if you were to bombard a site with these links, google would simply ignore them and your competitor would stay in the same place due to the diverse backlinks they already have, probably
but if the only links you ever had are all the same, then google discounts them, then its the same as your site having zero backlinks at all. hense the drop in serps.
