I know because I have a degree in mechanical engineering. I took math classes for 9 semesters. Every freshmen gets that order of operations gag from a professor with a sense of humor. Turn in a paper with an equation written without proper brackets and you fail. There is a reason we have been using brackets for the last 400 years.
