Talk to your friend openly rather than dropping unsubtle hints. I live by something I call the Springer principle. What would guests on the Jerry Springer show do? What would they not do? They would not calmly discuss the situation, so that's what I would do. Maybe just show him the couch first without saying anything and see what he has to say.
Just say "I'd like you to see something and tell me what you think." You may reasons by saying he feels terrible about what happened and ask relay he can do to make it right. He may even have a creative solution, like he may know of a similar replacement sofa available at a greatly reduced price.
I can't think of any legal theory that would hold him responsible for the cat acting like a cat and scratching after you volunteered to have the cat in your house. Cats scratch sofas. That's what cats do. You volunteered to have a cat in your living room.
