My first Windows machine ran 3.1, then I upgraded to 3.11 for Workgroups. Not much of an improvement...
It was a 486DX2 with a 420 MB (I think) HD and a walloping 4MB of ram. It cost $2,499 before tax
About a month later, the first pentiums went on sale
Anyone can buy a better machine now for less than the sales tax added to the price of that 486DX2. Upgrading the RAM to 8MB was a couple of hundred bucks, and replacing my burnt out 13" colour monitor cast about $350.
I do not miss those days...
