Questions about buying expired domains

I know that 99.999% are snatched up by drop services and everything and unttainable at reasonable or affordable prices. The question I have, is, is there software I can use to look for domains in a certain industry/niche/whatever else which do not have huge competition, but could be useful? (domain compass or some shit?)

Google will pick up on it if I buy domains and suddenly link to my site right after, right? But I could probably get some use out of redirected visitors if the site use to be something related to mine, right?

I do not see any way that could hurt the ranking of my site..

What do I need if I want to try catching some relavent expired domains? Is it worth it at all?

My thinking is that the people chasing drops are looking for at least a set minimum traffic and backlinks or whatever else. Domains with, say, 100 typeins per year could be well worth the $8 to me...

Just thinking out loud, here. And I am sure that I am not the first and only to think of going after the less competitive ones. But it should be possible to find drops in niches without much competition at all, yeah?
