As for the Canadian Flags on backpacks, I backpacked through Europe when I was 21 and I did indeed meet a dude from Florida that was doing just that. I do also realize that most do not do this.
But of course I'm lying right??

When I went backpacking, tons of americans had canadian flags on their backpacks. A few got busted when someone spoke french to them.
