Unfortunately that's what happens when people cry wolf and exaggerate. In the 1970s, the environmentalists wanted to ban aerosols because aerosols made the earth COOLER, they claimed. Hubert Lamb, director of the Climate Research Unit, was one of the ones warning about a man made ice age. When the 1980s were toasty, environmentalists including Lamb changed their tune and said global WARMING would sink California by the year 2000. It's 2011 and California is still there. Some of the top scientists quoted in the 80s and 90s have admitted they were lying. All of that exaggeration eliminated a lot of credibility in some people's opinion. It's true that California might be in danger in 5,000 years, depending on sun cycles, pollutants, and other things. Once you've claimed it would be under water in 20 years and it's totally unaffected 30 years later some people stop listening to you, though.
