There are land disputes all around the world.
Japan and Russia have a dispute about the Kuril islands. Seems these islands were Japanese since the late 1800s, but at the close of WWII Russia attacked and invaded them, and took them over. Since then Japan has been demanding Russia give the islands back. But so far as the Russians are concerned, those islands now belong to Russia - and the Russian government is in charge there.
Possession is nine-tenths of the law.
