The top women's football (soccer) team would lose by about 20-40 goals to even the lowest ranked men's team on the world level. Letting women play in the NFL or NHL would simply be an invitation to their deaths. The top ranked women's tennis player would be hard pressed to crack the top 100 men's rankings. The top women's boxer woudn't even make the top 1000 of the male side. Same with the world's top female power lifter.
Making pro football (soccer) a mixed sport as you say would only serve to bring down the level of play. The only way to do it would be to start up an entirely separate league for it, but unless you're offering massive amounts of cash to the male players none of the best ones would join it.
In short, bad idea.
