This is all, of course, my opinion, so take it as such.

Playboy is a funny company, in that it's almost "upside down" in terms of technology. In most companies, technology directives flow down from the top. Look at Facebook, Zynga, etc. In some companies, such as Google, technology directives flow down from the top, but interesting technology suggestions also percolate back up from the engineers.

In Playboy's case, however, bright ideas are suppressed by a hostile and borderline incompetent layer of management that reaches into the top levels of the organization. Innovation is stifled, and just "keeping up" with the current state of the industry becomes a struggle for them.

Remember that at BEST they were led somewhat astray about the Reality Cash numbers and prospects. This probably soured the company on the affiliate model, especially after lackluster performance proceeded the acquisition.

Without Lensman actively pushing, and with much of the real talent having left the building (with a few very notable exceptions), it's probably tough to do much of anything but tread water.
