Gingrich Plummets, Ron Paul Surges to Lead in New Poll 12/19

A new survey of likely Republican caucus voters shows Ron Paul leading the pack in Iowa.

In a Public Policy Polling survey released Sunday, the Texas congressman garnered 23 percent of the vote. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney followed with 20 percent, while former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich finished with 14 percent.

PPP surveyed 597 likely voters from Friday to Sunday. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 4 percent.

The poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization, and was conducted through automated telephone interviews.

PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidates, according to a company press release.

The poll’s full results are as follows:

— Ron Paul, 23 percent

— Mitt Romney, 20 percent

— Newt Gingrich, 14 percent

— Rick Santorum, 10 percent

— Michele Bachmann, 10 percent

— Rick Perry, 10 percent

— Jon Huntsman, 4 percent

— Gary Johnson, 2 percent.

— 7 percent of respondents said they would vote for someone else, or were not sure who they would support.
