The earliest Christians 100 AD era, thought he was born in a place much closer to his home of Nazareth. It wasn't until, I think, around the 12th or 13th Century that some traveling European Queen on a pilgrimage decided it was in Bethlehem. Which is a long way from Nazareth and on a donkey would of been an impossible trip for a pregnant woman.
This Queen also brought back a lot of holy relics she had found and installed them in churches so people could come and worship them. And leave money at the church.
It's all a business. Religion is the best run business in the World.
