I saw on the above some cool part of told by the other guys though -
if you can do animation and web design - what makes you think you cannot do both?
Those actually can be merged into one service and makes you less expendable.
I'm saying expendable, because every specialist on market /does not matter if it's with the adult or mainstream/ is expendable. If you're more experienced, you got the better chance to do something more.
Of course you're free to choose your own path and thus to get better with only one of these, a better animator, a better designer. Have in mind that everyone now is designer and the prices went down to the ground. There are not much companies or clients who would pay you a desired /from your side/ fee for your service. You think you can work with Photoshop? Okay - guess how many of us can do the same. You think you can code or write CSS - and for a site you want to get paid with 1000 bucks? Wow, the client will tell you that his cousin will do that for 40 bucks or for free.
If I were you I would stick with the animation thing and when a client comes I would do the design for him. Oh wait - I actually do that. Except for the fact I don't work with 3D programs. I draw comics ( as many more guys around ). Someone would say the others are better than me - but there will be guys who would say they like exactly my style.
Yes Loki has really good stuff, but that does not mean you cannot compete him.

The one thing I liked the most with the comments on the above was that part where they were telling you: "The world doesn't need another guy doing art who isn't doing it for the love of it. "
Everyone here left a part of his soul in his works. Doesn't matter if we talk about directors, who shots cocks and butts, or flash animator who's doing promotional ads in 1990's style. That "soul" thing we call it "style".
There's a guy here who's shooting a "different" kind of porn and he's having his successes, because he loves what he does. Check the sites of Niki Montero - she's having a fun while doing that! What a lucky she is ! In all the ways you should do something on your behalf for your own future.

Good luck.

Yes, I plan on being able to be able to do some 2d animation if I decide to go with web design...as flash/as3 and other interactive development courses are taught as part of the course.

The biggest problem I'm having is deciding which path to choose, because I don't want to spend a lot of money trying to become a 3d animator, if I will end up doing mostly design work.

If this were the case, I'd rather put my money towards courses in web design.

Some may consider it a bad start for me to pursue a career solely on the ability to break into the adult industry...

But working in this industry is where my real passion lies.

Of course, I know that I will also have to do mainstream work and will most likely only be able to supplement my income with adult ventures.

Regarding the statements about not needing guys that don't really love do art for the love of it goes,

You have this problem in every industry...

Not everyone loves what they do for a living.

In most cases, the opposite will actually be true. Art is not some sacred institution, of which only those who burn with passion for it should be a part.

If it is acceptable for people to work in industries in which they hate, then there should be no problem with people choosing art as a profession.

Of course, if you think that people should only do whatever they love, or those who do not love what they are doing should only work in the service industry, that's a different story.

That being said, I may not have as much of a love for art as you do but I am definitely not one of those people that is just trying to break into the field because I think it's just an easy job where I will be able to sit around drawing all day.

Thanks for your help though.
