Alcohol and guns, horsing around with guns - bad gun handling, bad practices.
I'm also in the "no excuses, he knew better, or should have" camp. Thankfully he shot himself and not a bystander. The guilt of another's bad gun handling injury or death is not something I would want to have to live with.
I figure the woman part of the story is mostly media sensationalism, tho no doubt sex hormones were making him more of an idiot than usual.
His team and trainers must feel like crap.
