I think this is an important aspect to take into consideration when (thinking about) changing a user interface (as opposed to a sales page): user alienation. I'm not saying changing a user interface will result in a mass exodus, but it does have consequences.
About 5 years ago a client switched his entire office to Apple/MacOS. The reason: Windows Vista. At that time, new PCs came with Vista and Microsoft had already announced they would stop supporting XP. He had tried a laptop with Vista and didn't like the design changes. To make a long story short: his initial frustration (the "
hey wtf? this is not Windows a I know it"-sentiment) resulted in him making a decision he would otherwise not have made: taking the time to look at alternatives.
I still remember when he said: "If I have to retrain people to use a new OS, it might as well be MacOS".
