This is wrong. Hollywood controls the majority of distribution channels from the theaters to most media stores to the actual ratings systems. It's a racket through and through.
While nothing is stopping Wheaton from getting investors, producing his own stuff, Hollywood and the distribution companies are still the gatekeepers. For him to sell his stuff on iTunes, he needs to have a rating that has to be paid for that is also run by the movie studios. Don't pay for the rating, can't distribute on iTunes much less advertise on broadcast networks.
Hollywood controls nearly every viable avenue when it comes to movies. The fact that Darth Vader still has not received residuals because Return of the Jedi still has yet to show a profit exposes the creative accounting that goes on. There is a reason Hollywood spends as much money as they do on lobbying and it's not because they want a level playing field to compete on.
