To answer your question, replacing old files with new files will work with the following caveats: - The version number will not update. You can update it manually by changing the value in the settings table in your database to 3.2.0. Having a wrong version number won't do any harm, though, except to be disinformative.
- Be careful not to overwrite your configuration, templates, and userFunctions.inc.php files.
- This is not guaranteed to work for all versions, but if you currently have 3.1.2 it will work for this version, because there were no changes to any database tables.

1.Done
2.Seems latest.tar.gz doesn't contain any of those files,so i suppose i am safe.I suppose you though how i used full version, but i extracted latest.tar.gz which was downloaded when clicking on update
3.Yes i had 3.1.2 version.
So i guess what i did was enough.
