Total generally means total points for both teams (most sports include overtime but you should look at your books rules). Some books will provide separate team totals but they will specifically say team 1 total, team 2 total.

ie. the TOTAL for the superbowl game is 53 -110 (-110 means you are paying 10% vig, -125 means you are paying 25% juice, +110 means the book will give you 10% on your bet...etc)

so if you wanted to bet the OVER, the combined scores of both teams will have to = 54 points for you to win, 53 for you to "push" your bet.

You bet $110 and you will win $100.

ie. Spread betting
New England Patriots -3 -110 (they must win by at least 3 points and you are paying $110 to win 100)

New york giants +3 -110 (if giants win the game, or lose by 1 or 2 you will win your bet, if they lose by 3 you "push" and get your money back, lose by more than 3 and you lose your bet)

my examples are using american style odds.
