Depends on the brand. The darker tequila is aged longer so generally smoother. The blanco (clear/silver) tastes more like the agave. Reposado (medium age) is usually a happy compromise. Some anejos taste too much like the oak they are aged in.

The exceptions would be cheap tequila like Jose Cuervo that just colors their tequila to look aged. Look for 100% agave on the bottle.

Any milagro is good, from the $30 blanco to the $80 extra reserve anejo. Corralejo, Don Julio, Corazon de Agave are all good. The special edition jose cuervo de la familia is actually good but maybe not worth the $150. Cazadores is a good every tequila.
