In the website field they may look at the url, then run a whois and see if it matches the data from the signup form.
Again im sure the majority of sites who do ask for approval dont so it for this reason and dont go as far to verify and im not sure on any other reasons
but its a thought.
trust me i hate it too. running a review site, you have hundreds of sign up forms to go through and its a pain when you want to grab a link and you have to wait. Especially the year for digital playground

Nowadays i never use a domain email anymore. I use gmail or yahoo.com. Unless they specifically ask for it.
