Dude, "emo" has been around since the early 90's. The first time "emo" was used it was a shorter way to say "emotive-hardcore," that is hardcore that deals with deeper things than just mostly politics and violence, introspective hardcore, so-to-say. It didn't even evolve from metal. Bands like Jawbreaker, Dinasaur Jr., Fugazi and Mohinder are "emo"

Emo is not dressing strange and wearing make up.

And I gotta say that if you think metal is shit nowadays, well, you're just being one of those oldheads, you know the type "back in my day blah blah blah" don't be that guy. There were waaay more shit bands back in the 80's considered "metal", think every fucking hairband around. And for that matter, if music didn't change, a band like Pantera would have stayed a glam metal band like when they first started out. If you're a musician you gotta understand that music changes.
Mastodon

That's metal nowadays.
Killswitch engage

So what you don't like a band like Avenged Sevenfold? They're still talented
