People rise to the level of their incompetence, it seems. If you can code, you get promoted to systems architect. If you can architect, you get promoted to project manager. If you can manage a project, you get promoted to director. On it goes until you land in a job you can't do and there you stay.
It's been a challenge for me to stay in the code, where I like to be. I hire people, then reduce staff, then hire someone else, and spend half my time on taxes and other government paperwork. I just like the clever algorithms. I like to find hard to impossible programming tasks and find a way to cheat to get it done. (Like my favorite, doing all of the intensive processing once, ahead of time.)
