ITV Relaunches 'Space:1999'
The potential new TV series will be called Space: 2099. But will it be the next Battlestar Galactica or the next V?
Relauching classic TV series for a new generation can be a tricky thing, just ask the producers of "Charlie's Angels" or any of the other revivals that have failed to win an audience. Of the many reboots, "Battlestar Galactica" is the gold standard, thanks to a popularity among viewers and critics that outshined the original series. But now, another sci-fi show from the '70s may get its second chance to shine as well.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ITV Studios America and HDFilms are relaunching "Space: 1999" as a potential TV series. And to update the name, it will now be called "Space: 2099."
Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in 1975, "Space: 1999" ran for two seasons as it chronicled the story of the colonists of Moonbase Alpha who found themselves stranded after the Moon was knocked out of Earth's orbit and sent uncontrollably hurling through space. Martin Landau and Barbara Bain led the cast as Commander John Koenig and Doctor Helena Russell, respectively.
?After more than 35 years, we are thrilled to be developing a new vision of our much beloved franchise for audiences worldwide," said ITV Studios International Managing Director, Paul Buccieri. "Historically, the 'Space: 1999' brand has entertained and fascinated millions of people."
The relaunch will be overseen by HDFilms President Jace Hall, who was one of the producers of the "V" revival on ABC that ran for two seasons.
"Science fiction is a powerful format capable of visualizing the human condition in thought-provoking ways," related Hall. "While we are indeed re-imagining the franchise and bringing something new and relevant to today?s audiences. I feel strongly that some of the overall tones set by the original Space: 1999 television show represent an exciting platform to explore possibilities.?
"Space: 2099" is currently development and the producers have not yet approached any networks about picking it up.

Space: 2099 is poised for a comeback.
ITV Studios America and HDFILMS announced plans for a reimagining of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's famed franchise of the 1970s, then called Space: 1999. The news comes months after Fox and producer Seth MacFarlane announced they would be reviving Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, a 1980s miniseries from Carl Sagan.
