Well Ryanair is not an ordinary airline you know... I've bought tickets from them when they priviledged Visa Electron with fee less transactions and they charged whatever it is need to be charged . They also give you a shit exchange rate if you're paying in £s or $s so they make money from you that way too. Their flight turn round times are crazy, passengers get off a flight and new passengers get on within about a 20 minute period.
To answer the OPs question, with Ryanair you can only use their prepaid mastercard. You won't have that problem with other budget airlines and you can use your paxum card, also note that with Ryanairs prepaid card they issue charges if you don't use it regularly
