One of these retailers sells on to a friend for $120, this friend then opens an amazon store and resells on there for $170. He's now undercutting your entire retail network and also, reselling in an unauthorised capacity since he is not part of your retail network.

That makes sense as well. I sell something that only myself and one other person outside of the manufacturer are authorized to sell, and the price is strictly mandated. It's relatively lucrative, so I wouldn't risk the relationship by doing so, but I certainly could do what you outlined.
