You're right about "having" a cat.
But actually when you have a cat who becomes "yours" you should be quite honored. Cats aren't adopted, they adopt. If a cat accepts you as his human, that is a very special thing. The mistake is thinking you can have or mold a cat.

Although cats are quite civilized and clean, they can't shovel out the litter or change it. That is one concession of being a cat's human.
