OK, Amsterdam isn't the United States. Prostitution - heh - sex in general - is legal, open, accepted, as it is in most of Europe. Of course, don't be stupid, but Amsterdam is the second best city in the world I've ever been to.
The Dutch are incredible educated - most of the ones we met spoke eight languages fluently. There doesn't seem to be a specific red light district (the guides will tell you otherwise) - the whole city tends to phase in and out of it throughout.
I don't know how it works from the straight side (I'm gay), but am told that as we experienced Hamburg and Berlin (Germany) are the best adult-oriented scenes in Europe. (Speaking German especially in Berlin is imp, I learned in school how to embarass myself thouroughly with formal German lol) Germany is even more loose than the Dutch as far as sex, and when they get liquor in them, well, you'll see things you've never seen. I've seen five drunk lesbians dancing and throwing shotglasses in Cologne (Germany), guys who were so drunk they could barely sit on their barstools singing to American songs (they didn't speak English), hustlers showing their anatomy in bars...Europe as a whole (except Italy, shreeek) including the UK is much more sexual than the US. Definitely the best times of our life. You can't even smoke in bars here much less buy the entire bar a round (that got expensive) or buy the bartender a drink.
