She used to flirt with me and I gobbled it up. One night she invited me over to her house for dinner with her family (mom and an uncle). I was excited and honored. I had never seen Mary hanging out with any other guys, although many had tried.
Anyway, the big night comes I walk over to her house, sit down at the dinner table only to learn that they were all vegetarians. In 1967 I am not sure I even knew what a vegetarian was, but I got a crash course that night.
While I am aware that there is tofu available these days that is edible, back in those days it had zero flavor. As I recall they made some kind of meatloaf out of it. What I do recall with great clarity is that it sucked. I knew then I could never be a vegetarian and that Mary and I would never stand a chance together.
