All I know about South America is from the TV Shows or the internet. I know that the most dangerous country /due to the highest crime/ is Colombia, and Rio (in Brasil) is not only football/or soccer as US guys named it/, and Carnival. The same could be told about my country as well due to the large amount of robbery, frauds and so on... The bigger the amount of people-the higher crime percentage (we are not sure that we can say that for China or North Korea, because their law system...
About Argentina I've heard and seen only good stuff -

Also one of the best comic artists I know is from Argentina ( the rest are from Brasil /Latin America/). You never know...
