I'm not reading your whole post or this whole thread. Just keep your cat indoors. You already lost him once and were lucky enough to get him back. You probably won't have the same luck twice.
Cats kept indoors tend to live for about 15 to 16 years vs cats who are let out (7 years). Cats that are let out are more prone to disease, toxins, tics, animal attacks, and sometimes, stupid human attacks.
You don't need to ask this question - you already know what to do.
