As a parent I'd be upset too.

The driver was at fault and should be reprimanded in some way. She has no right to verbally abuse any child no matter what he says.

It's good that you talk with the school and see what you can work out. You don't want to do it in front of the children but you do need to let your son know you have his back. After all, someone with more power/authority just let him have it for no good reason and he can't fight that on his own.
