He has a concealed weapons permit, so it's not about the supermarket, it's about having a gun at all times. He wasn't like "Going to the supermarket, better bring my gun just in case...." It's "leaving the house. Gun? Check".
You don't get to plan when something like the above happens. In Miami where concealed weapons are allowed, if you saw a police officer shoot someone in the back of the head at 7-11, you're within your rights to shoot the police officer, because whose to say you're not next?
US culture is just much different than say northern Europe.
My wife is from Mexico City and I really do want to spend some years of my life living there, and I'm still not sure what I'd do as far as a gun goes. It's illegal to carry a concealed weapon, but I feel like it's kind of retarded not to have one in a city like that. I know I would never use my gun unless my family's life was in danger (ie if I was in a car jacking they could have my car, just not my family) but sometimes they came for your family, not your car... How could I live with myself if I hadn't prepared myself for that moment? Then again, do I want to spend years of my life in a Mexican prison because I was walking around with a gun? I dunno. I know I'd rather be in jail with my family alive than be physically free but with no family because I refused to protect them.
Then again, if they seriously came for your kids, would your handgun help against 8 guys with automatic rifles?
