I'm from Canada myself. Just I understand how much different it is here to the USA.

How long ago was it when just about everybody carried some form of personal protection, whether it was a knife, sword, gun, etc? 100 years? 3 generations? And now it's just "crazy" that *anyone* in the world should continue to do so? Some people are a lot less willing to hand over their personal safety to a set of externally controlled processes.

Like oh, that man is raping that woman in the bus seat across from me. Let me check what the correct procedure for that is. Here in Canada, that would likely be... everyone would give themselves a "safe distance" to keep away from the rape in progress, the ladies would scream hysterically and cry, and the men would look around at each other like "are we really going to get involved? Me? You? You first..."

Without security there, people are just lost now for the most part. Maybe 1 in 50 people here have the willingness coupled with the capability of dealing with intense situations like that. I'm pretty sure not having a weapon is a big part of that. Not "oh I have a gun I'm going to use it" necessarily, but the mentality that comes with being a person who carries a weapon. People who walk around with a knife have thought about using it. Same goes with any weapon. It prepares you simply by possessing it. People who have never carried a weapon have likely never prepared themselves mentally the same way a person who does carry has.
