garce: It's an interesting situation to me. While WP has made it easier for anyone to have a site, it's userbase now ranges from the most technically proficient to what seems like a huge demographic that has little to no knowledge of even the most basic of skills (ftp'ing in ASCCI or BINARY format... most don't even understand the difference).
As a result, unless the host is willing to secure up any basic holes, WP self-hosted blogs are just ripe for abuse by others.
I'll bet most users don't even do basic security like htaccess protection of their admin area, or restricting uploads to specific users/ip's.
