Yep, mpeg4 is based on the mov codec, basically a standardized mov, so Apple machines have no trouble with it. WMV files most often have mpeg4 inside, so if it can play most wmv, it can also play mp4. (It IS playing mpeg4, after extracting the mpeg4 from the wmv).
What wmv gives you is the ability to pack jpegs, links, or other elements in along with the video. Think of it like a zip file that contains a video and whatever other stuff you put in there. If you're not going to also add pictures and stuff, wmv is pointless.
