I think it's for one of four reasons mostly:

1> This world sucks, and they're going to save them from a lifetime or living in this shitty place
2> They can't come to terms with the mess they're making, and don't want their children growing up thinking bad things about them
3> They want to erase as much of their existence as possible
4> The devil is coming and they need to "save" their children (religious/delusional)
