I think the last line in your post sums it up very well. It doesn't really matter what the law says or implies. It is clearly an ambiguous law that is open to interpretation. In the end it will all come down to whether they believe Zimmerman had good intentions and was trying to do the right thing and things went bad or whether he saw the kid and decided he was going to take matters into his own hands no matter what and was negligent.
