The story goes that St. Maarten was split between the French and Dutch based on a foot race around the island. The two guys faced opposite directions and ran, where they met would be the dividing line from the starting point.
The French guy had a bottle of wine with him and the Dutchman had gin. The French guy sipped his wine and the Dutch guy drank his whole bottle of gin and passed out. Thus the reason for the larger French side of the island.
That's what they told me anyway when I was there. Nice story for tourists I guess.
