If you read the novel you will get that that there are so many things that did not existed in books. Probably they made it to get the series more spicy. Season 1 ends with all the Night Watch guys going out of the Wall, but this happens in second book. So they did a lot of different stuff that makes the movies watch worthy.
I'd say - yes - watch the movies - but get it from first season to know who's who.
