I totally understand what you are saying about updates for the same version, etc..
I do think it would be a shame if you did move to a software service platform as your current one off pricing is one of the reasons that I chose Strongbox over the competition a few years ago.
Of course you have to do what's right for your business.
I've also looked at Clonebox with interest a few times. Maybe I'll add that to my package at some point. I have daily backups with ISPrime but I don't feel 100% confident as I've (luckily) not had you use it so far so I don't know how efficient it is. I do realize that your disaster recovery with Clonebox is much more efficient. But anyway, I digress. On with fighting the Russian thieves and pirates!
