To add one thing to what uniquemkt said, a lower end Android is a lot less painful to replace when you drop it in water or whatever. Capabilities are similar. My wife stopped buying Apple after a couple of them broke from falls or whatever and now uses a $120 Android with unlimited everything from Boost for $45 / month.
For me, control and standards is the big thing. It's MY phone. If I want to hook it to my network, use it for VPN, etc. that's MY business. I don't need Apple telling me what I can and can't do, especially telling me I HAVE to use itunes, which I hate.
