It did nothing. People downloaded the workaround client from their site, or went to one of the dozens of other usenet indexing sites instead. No one went after the other sites. It had zero impact in usenet access in the uk
Blocking pirate bay will similarly have no impact. Torrents are not popular any more, there are millions of other tracking sites, anyone that knows what they are doing can get round it in seconds
It is pointless and establishes government censorship precedents. As someone that works in porn, I don't like the idea of the government being allowed to block access to sites they think are unsuitable. If I wanted that I'd move to china.
Hope that is clear.

While I feel you have some very legit points about blocking one site not having much if any impact on pirating as a whole, to say that torrents are not popular just isn't correct. According to Alexa The Pirate Bay is ranked #79 in the US and #72 globally.
That seems pretty popular to me.
There are a lot of hardcore pirates out there who will find a workaround as soon as one source is shut down. There are also people like my brother's sister in law who downloads a ton of music and movies and doesn't know shit. If they shut off the site she uses she would have to wait until someone else showed her where else to go.
